NCAA Division I players from universities: CAL, UCLA, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Tulsa and Vanderbilt competed in this year's round robin competition. It was also the second consecutive year incorporating eight USIA juniors to compete against the college players. It came down to two CAL players: senior Nick Andrews and sophomore Ben McLachlan. Both Andrews and McLachlan had to beat USTA juniors for the right to meet in the final. Andrews bested McLachlan - his teammate and Napa roommate - in a tiebreaker shootout 10-7 to win the Classic and a wild card into a future USIA Pro Circuit event. Meadowood's Doug King then awarded Andrews the Norma Miner Outstanding Player Award.
