how to: An Evening with Edmund de Waal
with Edmund de Waal
The bestselling author of The Hare With Amber Eyes is back with a new book The
White Road: an intimate joumey in search of porcelain, a substance he has been
EFTA01202023
obsessed with for most of his life. It is a journey across continents that begins in
Jingdezhen, China, the birthplace of porcelain, and embraces Venice, Versailles,
Dublin, Dresden, the Appalachian Mountains of South Carolina and the English
south-west.
In this talk Edmund de Waal will explain why for centuries, porcelain has transfixed
emperors and alchemists, philosophers, craftsmen and collectors, all eager to
decode the secret of 'white gold'. The White Road is full of compelling encounters
with those who were witness to its creation, those who were inspired, made rich or
heartsick by it, and the many whose livelihoods, minds and bodies were broken by it
in some of the darkest moments of our history.

how to: The Mathematics of Love
with Hannah Fry
The roller coaster of romance is hard to quantify; defining how lovers might feel from a set of simple
equations is impossible. But that doesn't mean that mathematics isn't a crucial tool for understanding love.
In this talk Dr Hannah Fry will take us on a fascinating journey through the patterns that define our love
lives, tackling some of the most common yet complex questions pertaining to love: What's the chance of
finding love? What's the probability it will last? How does online dating work, exactly? How can you avoid
divorce? When is it right to compromise? Can game theory help us decide who to approach in a bar?
When should you settle down?

how to: Read James Joyce, Ulysses, with Will Self
with Will Self
1hold this book to be the most important expression which the present age has found: it is a book to
which we are all indebted, and from which none of us can escape' - T S Eliot
Divided into eighteen sections, it contains a quarter of a million words. Modeled on Homer's Odyssey, it is
based on the events of June 16, 1904 and includes, said Joyce. 'so many enigmas and puzzles that it will
keep the professors busy for centuries'. It is, said Anthony Burgess Inimitable, and also possibly mad'. So
what better person to take on the possibly mad challenge of introducing Ulysses in an hour and a half than
the inimitable Will Self?

how to: Emotional Intelligence with Daniel Goleman
with Daniel Coleman
Twenty years ago Daniel Coleman, a science reporter on the New York Times, published a book called
Emotional Intelligence which explored how emotions are regulated in the brain. Coleman hoped that his
findings might filter into the culture and effect the ways in which we think about success. Today, the
Harvard Business Review has hailed emotional intelligence as 'paradigm-shattering' concept, and in
schools across America El has become part of the curriculum, with children being taught to respond
empathetically to others, to identify what makes them stressed, and to explore the ways in which
communication can resolve, rather than aggravate, conflict.
We are delighted to welcome Daniel Coleman to the How to Academy. to discuss with us the idea that has
come to define our age.

how to: The Company of Trees. (A Personal Journey with Thomas
Pakenham)

In this talk acclaimed historian and bestselling author Thomas Pakenham , the original Man of the Trees,
will share his profound love of trees.

large arboretum at his family estate, Tullynally in Ireland, his forays to other tree-filled parks and
plantations, his often hazardous seed-hunting expeditions, and his efforts to preserve magnificent old
trees and historic woodlands.

how to: Understand the Universe
with Carlo Rovelli
Join us for an unmissable lunchtime talk by Carlo Rovelli, the author of the bestselling Seven Brief
Lessons on Physics: an 80 page book on physics written for readers that know little or nothing about the
subject which has now sold over 300,000 copies.
For this talk, not in 80 pages but in less than hour, Professor Rovelli will explain in simple terms some of
Einstein's theory of general relativity, quantum mechanics, black holes, the complex architecture of the
universe, elementary particles, gravity and the nature of the mind.
The strangeness, the mysteries, the poetry, and especially the intense beauty of the world described
today by physics will be entertainingly revealed and you will be able to wonder at the bending of space,
the slowing of time, the wavy nature of matter, the quanta of space. the vastness of the cosmos, and the
mysterious relation between heat and time.

how to: Spies, Codes and Guerrillas 1939-1945
with Max Hastings
In this talk for the How To Academy based on his new book on Spies. Codes and Guerrillas. Max Hastings
will talk about the espionage and intelligence machines of all sides in World War II, and the impact of
spies, code•breakers and partisan operations on events.
He will examine key moments, such as the Soviet espionage operations which dwarfed those of every
other belligerent in scale, as well as the code breaking operation at Bletchley Park — the greatest
intelligence achievement of the conflict.
The talk will also touch on other less well known tales of high courage ashore, at sea and in the air such
as womanising Richard Sorge pretending to be a committed Nazi whilst spying for the Soviet Union from
the German embassy in Tokyo. and Joseph Rochefort, the awkward, overlooked US naval intelligence
officer who in a moment of inspiration became the man who won the battle of Midway.
For an evening full of high policy, human drama, treachery. guerrilla warfare, ciphers. clandestine
meetings in cafes, and wireless operators tapping out messages across the airwaves, this is the talk to
come to.

how to: Is Silicon Valley the New Welfare State?
with Evgeny Morozov
In this special talk for the How To Academy in the intimate and ultra cool setting of Second Home. Evgeny
Morozov, one of the most brilliant and respected commentators on the Internet, will discuss one of the
most important issues today: namely. how technology companies promise us a seemingly genuine path
towards social mobility. Thus, they are more than happy to provide the public with free services in
exchange for our data.
Initially those services were limited to communication and search online but today they increasingly
include services that promise better healthcare (think wearables). better education (think MOOCs). better
transportation (think Uber) and even better and free connectivity for all (think Intemet.org).
But what are the moral, political, and social consequences of accepting this free bargain? And why are our
governments so eager to go along with Silicon Valley's plans?
