Thank you for your reply, Greg - the statistics are reminscent of the challenges the popularity of the Psychology
major at Harvard College presented to that department, which the President's Mind Brain & Behavior
Interfaculty Initiative ma have helped to decompress, at least a little. IN general on campus Wednesdays
after 11A, but of course available at your and Dr Knowlton's convenience. I've attached my CV for you and
Barbara; perhaps the most relevant bit is that I served on the MBB Steering Committee and received the
Provost's Award for Education Innovation. Looking forward to seeing you again soon - Best, Mark

Mark, be happy to meet with you this summer. The courses you describe sound like a natural fit for connecting
several departments in rich ways. I should say up front that the 3 majors Psychology offers are up 26% the past 5 years,
with no growth in ladder FTEs, and our undergrad program was bursting at the seams 5 years ago. These days we award
far more bachelor's degrees than any other College major. As a result, we're not looking for things that would grow
enrollment, nor is it likely that we can redirect funds away from things we have to offer. Nevertheless, there may be
good synergies we can pursue. I suggest we include my Vice Chair for Undergrad Studies, Barbara Knowlton, in the
meeting, as she's on top of our undergrad resources and needs. I've copied her here. - Greg

Subject: To Prof Miller Re: Cognitive Neuroscience of Music
Greetings, Greg -
III following up on a recent meeting with Dean Judi Smith, who elicited the attached undergraduate multi-
disciplinary course development proposal this Spring Quarter when I was teaching my Music, Mind & Brain
seminar. Former Music School Directors Dan Neuman and Tim Rice established the course (syllabus attached)
in the Music School in 2010 when I moved from Harvard, where it was founded in 1998 as part of the
President's Mind, Brain & Behavior Interfaculty Initiative. The seminar was co-sponsored this year by the
Undergraduate Interdepartmental Program for Neuroscience of Letters & Sciences and the Music Industry,
Science, & Technology Program of the Music School. I was delighted to learn from some of my students that
the seminar was also accredited for Cognitive Science and Psychobiology majors and minors.

The course has been terribly oversubscribed and highly rated by students over the years, so Judi and I have
been brainstorming about how to avail it to more students interested in the multiple disciplines its topics cover,
including undergraduates seeking to develop their careers in graduate school and medical school. Might you be
available to meet this summer to advise me about course development?
Best,
Mark
