F,
We started down this road a few years ago. You and Howard gave input and this list came out of it.
I'd still love to be involved in this one and I think Dan Ariely might be a good addition. Given your updated
list, you may not want everyone from the list below.
In any case, I thought you'd find the old notes interesting.
LS
Included here:
Participants you agree should be invited
Participants you wanted more info. on; you'll let me know
Preliminary questions and approach to agenda
Info. below....
Stone
PARTICIPANTS WE WANT TO INVITE ASAP -- does your office want to issue
the invitation? Howard? do you want me involved in this? Figuring
you and Howard know these folks best and it's a phone call from your
office... Cecile and I can follow up with information on the details.
I. Charlie Rose -- What about Charlie Rose moderating part of the
event? And maybe: Jonathan Zittrain and David Gergen to moderate parts
of the event as well.
2. Ehud Barak
3. Alan Dershowitz
4. Steve Kosslyn
5. Howard Gardner
6. Martin Novak
7. Stephen Hawking
8. George Mitchell
9. Tom Pritzker
10. Nathan Myhrvold
11. Jonathan Zittrain (You're still considering him, so there's bio
info. below. I'd like to use him to help moderate pieces of this.)
12. Martin Seligman
13. Graham Allison
14. David Gergen (I may also tap him to moderate parts of this.)
15. Wes Clark

I like that he has a broad background... cognitive psych (Yale),
business (he worked at MSFT for a while), academics, degree from the
Kennedy School, then a law degree.... now co-chairs the Berkman Center
for intemet and society. So he can look at government and power,
technology and power, etc. Most of all, he asks excellent questions
and the other folks attending would enjoy talking with him (he doesn't
need to be the center of attention). He was one of 20 staff members
in 3 successive administrations on the Intelligence Committee... very
powerful, very secretive committee (worked for George Tenent).
Martha Nussbaum

Louis Menand - historian, I found him, but don't know him. Seems
like a good fit....

BONO
Marvin and Gloria know him.
QUESTIONS -- general direction
POWER
Why have it?
What are the most interesting things to do with it?
What does it mean?
Power and force -- when to use each?
Types of power: financial, intellectual, social, celebrity.
Media's role in the concept of power... how does media extend it?
Game theory of power: for demonstration purposes...execute one person,
keeps thousands at bay....
Power: work, energy, temperature, reputation
Enough power can simplify your life? can reduce friction?
Along with reputation... people assume you're correct. Stone's
favorite quote on power: POWER MEANS THAT PEOPLE BELIEVE YOU EVEN WHEN
YOU DON'T MAKE SENSE. POWERLESSNESS MEANS THAT PEOPLE DON'T BELIEVE
YOU EVEN WHEN YOU DO MAKE SENSE.
synonymous with survival
What are the most successful ways to undermine an individual or group's
power?
