I would really like to be my own woman in terms of financial success. I have some solid medical research
ideas but those make no money. I can write one or two non-textbook books (and probably will) but those
also make no money. I have an idea for a cool business that has been brewing for 10 years but not sure
it would work - seems foolish to drop everything for a silly idea.
I currently run 4 portfolios as part of special initiatives, which is about 300M. There are 44 grants
spanning 53 countries and 150+ cities. I manage all aspects and do it solo with one admin staff and
outsourced legal. My payout is about 80M annually. I also publish at least 10 scientific peer reviewed
articles and a monthly column (under a fake name) for the FT
Neurosurgery and Neurology and have two board certifications. I speak a little bit of a lot of languages.
I've spent at least part of every year over the last (gasp) 20 years in crappy countries trying to help.
whether through the UN, the Foundation or my own efforts.
' ' " ' and I feel like I've given a ew orp ans, t ne students an
those with less than me a little tiny helping hand so they can grow up to have options.
I've got a small skill set. I have managed to do ok and am proud that I have completely earned
everything. No fakeness or games.
Now I feel like I've got some karma in the bank and I want to do good things. Big big good things. Id like
to be the first woman to do "X" in a way that I can be very wealthy and put money to work in smart ways.
I know a few things I could do right now if I had my own money, stuff that would matter and generate
more money and new science
I thought when I tumedM would run out of ideas or that science would pass me up and I would not
understand it. Instead, I feel like I have powerful ideas and the experience to know what will work and
what is interesting.

I make about 225K per year these days. Foundation, doctoring and publications. I should be making
500 to 600K like my colleagues with similar skills but Im happy at the public hospital since I feel like
the poorest should get the best even if they can't pay. Id work for free for them if I could.
My needs were a little weird this year be

I support 2 orphaillid per year and spend another 15K to support
the tiny project I It provides basic tools like learning heart
sounds or how to do basic resuscitation for does in developing countries. I spend 10K per year
supporting medical student associations in Nepal, China, Uganda and Tanzania.

but of course he's supporting his and since I am employed (and have some
basic skills) I feel like I shouldn't be someone's dependent. I try to save everything else. I have 250K
in my 401k and 150K in savings. Lease my car (short
attention span). I like watches so every few years I buy one.
Does that help?

I need career advice. Can I call you on the 30th? Will meet with Bill on Dec 10. Big re-org at
foundation, poverty stuff not as fun/challenging for me as science. Also enjoy doing more
neurosurgery. I enjoy working at the public hospitals and providing the best care possible for folks
who couldn't otherwise afford it. Want to do half time neuro and half time science philanthropy. The
most neuro I can do in one yr is 4 months (thats how academics works). Bill doesnt really do science
philanthropy except through nathan and his org is not somewhere I would thrive. I will have to
ro ose something to bill, or leave foundation and look for other science philanthropy iob bu
f course I want to
support him which means finding something Seattle based but super flexible. I feel like I have 3 to 5
years of creativity left. My brain isn't yet ready to pack it in. Plus I look DAMN GOOD (haha). I can
always try to make it work at foundation on poverty issues in a big org and feel really out of place.
Im struggling.
