Never before seen world developments have created unique challenges for leaders. The rate of change and its
increased complexity is depleting the power of leaders to adapt. The key challenge seems to be emotional
rather than an intellectual. Therefore, I believe that true leadership requires more than only a good education
and competencies. The diversity and experience of adversity can be better indicators of leadership success .
These types of life challenges has helped me to both improve and grow. My history of leadership may not be
reflected in my academic records, but through my acquisition, divestiture, and change of direction.
The hard lessons I have learned has given me the experience of how not to lead and how not to treat others. I
learnt to stay rational even under svere emotional pressures.
My experience of "life leadership" began in 2007, when I moved from my small Russian town Ulan- Ude to a
big city, Saint Petersburg. Burdened with years of provincial thinking I had to overcome and succeed by
building consensus not only of people of my own age but of people with various languages, cultural historys
and diverse goals.
If someone asked me today what the most prevailing problems in Russia are, I would certainly say
discrimination against minorities and the LGBT community would rank near the top.
Racist and neo-Nazi violence are issues that still remain. Saint- Petersburg and Moscow are major cities
where racism has a strong presence. For example, In 2008 when I was in my second year at college, there were
53 cases of racist and xenophobic violence in which 15 people were killed and 38 were injured. However, we
don't often hear in the media about these problems in Russia. After a year of living in St. Petersburg I had
witnesses injustice and unfairness towards ethnic minorities ,so I joined Inter-Ethnic Cooperation as a
volunteer to fight for the rights that should be inherent. I could not accept, that because I was Asian, I was not
allowed to participate in specific events, enter certain public spaces, and being forced to fear being beaten by
ultra-rightists or other radical groups. The organization's approach was to spread tolerance and democracy
among Russians by using a variety of techniques, including political campaigns. Education of youth regarding
the importance of racial tolerance was one of effective methods we used, visiting more than fifty public and
private schools.. Our efforts to reach political authorities were worthless, they remained uninterested in such
crimes. As for today there are some significant improvements in legal prosecutions of crimes of a racial basis
which makes me believe that my active participation in these political campaigns were not useless.
As a part of LGBT community, I also had to face injustice and hatred against gays and lesbians. The hardest
part of this experience was to accept myself as who I am and continue to live with it. Because of the religion
and high conservatism in my family, I never spoke about it with my family, friends or classmates. Being the
oldest child in the family of four, I always set an example for my younger siblings. I graduated high school
with honors, I was accepted to the most prestigious college in Saint Petersburg receiving a full merit
scholarship. I was afraid to shatter the image of myself that I had so carefully crafted.
Since there were not many places or websites were LGBT community could interact and meet others, my wife
and myself, decided to create a somewhat secret society using the Internet. Currently, we are developing our
own website for LGBT people around the world, especially for those who living in isolated areas such as
former Soviet Union's. Our mission with this website is to create an interactive social platform where gays,
lesbians and transgender can communicate freely with each other and make friends. The name of the website is
Unq.one as it perfectly defines who we are. However, the challenging part of this project was to advertise our
site to Russian-speaking users letting them know that we exist. Any attempts to use the Internet to expand

politically unpopular views are usually suppressed by the authorities The Internet domains in countries of
former Soviet Union are tracked and can be shut off even to a slight hint on LGBT. Thus, we also created a
specially customized application for iPhone and android that can't be be as easily blocked as IP. Although the
entire investment into this project came from our own budget, the website will be completely free for our
users. We believe that someday our social network will expand and become successful and that there will be
people who will want to support our project.
While my primary goal is a career in environmental sustainability and its areas of influence. I feel that as the
world is joined more closely on the intemet, the differences are more accentuated rather than diminished.
Having served in senior positions in both Harvard and the United Nations dealing with water scarcitywa a
major accomplishment , I spoke with the highest ranking diplomats about water issues in the same hushed
tones as were once reserved for racial and sexual differences that underlie most of my life
While my life were taking me from one place to another, I learned to understand the world and myself in a
completely different way. My experience of leading was emotionally and cognitively intense but in return, my
identity changed in a very fundamental way. I have now come to understand who I am and what I am capable
of doing.
