Dr' World Callao opens one year ahead of schedule
Khaleej Times
South America's largest and most modem container terminal on the west coast, DP World Callao, was officially inaugurated by Peruvian
President Alan Garcia Perez and DP World Chairman Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem.
Global port operator DP World's newest marine terminal, situated close to Peru's capital city, Lima, has opened a year ahead of schedule
after 27 months of construction following the granting of the concession in July 2006. Also attending the high profile ceremony were the
Minister of State of the UAE, Reem Al Hashimy, DP World CEO, Mohammed Sharaf, authorities of the Peruvian Government,
representatives of the business community and top executives from DP World. In his speech, DP World Chairman Sultan Ahmed Bin
Sulayem said: "We are pleased and proud that DP World Callao has joined DP World's global network and look forward to its bright
future. We believe Peru to be exemplary in economic and political stability in South America. It is also the ideal entry point for the west
coast of South America, which is a dynamic economy with a large cargo market and strong trade growth."
DP World CEO Mohammed Sharaf added: "DP World helps create opportunities for the communities and economies in which it
operates. DP World searches for, trains and employs local talent, and through its work brings in not only containers but more trade, more

jobs and more income for the entire economy. This in turn is translated into more income for the government and better services for the
people, which means more children going to school and more people accessing vital health care."
DP World Callao has an operating annual capacity of around 850,000 TEU (twenty foot equivalent container units) and is located in the
south zone of the port of Callao, covering an area of 225,000 square metres. Its two berths, each 350 metres with a 16 metre draft, are
capable of handling two post-Panamax vessels of around 8,000 TEU at the same time. The terminal has six Super Post Panamax giant
gantry cranes, 18 rubber tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) and state-of-the-art information technology. Its construction represents the most
important investment in the history of the Peruvian port industry, with hundreds of million dollars invested.
Global Environment awardMeanwhile, DP World's London Gateway has been recognised for its outstanding commitment to the
environment at a prestigious awards ceremony celebrating the best of the international maritime community. The team behind the
developing deep-sea container terminal and one of Europe's largest logistics parks on the Thames estuary in Essex were awarded the
Environmental Protection prize in the Lloyd's List Global Awards ceremony at the Dorchester Hotel in London on September 29.
London Gateway's Chief Executive, Simon Moore, said that the award was recognition of the outstanding hard work that has been put
into the environmental management programme at London Gateway.
Garcia: Large-scale projects boost Peru's development
Andina
Lima, Sep. 30 (ANDINA). President Alan Garcia said Thursday that the $500-million Muelle Sur container terminal in Callao is one of
the major projects undertaken by Peru to boost its development.
"Peru has successfully undertaken large-scale projects and initiatives," said Garcia Perez, "the new container terminal will put our
country on the same level as major ports on the West Coast of South America, from Panama to Chile."
President Garcia said that "this project will not only widen the doors of the country" but will also help overtake other terminals in the
region, "regaining the privileged position the Callao port once had."
"Now, Callao re-emerges strongly to turn other ports into alternative and secondary terminals to this one, which has historically,
geologically and geographically been the port of South America."
The Peruvian leader noted that the construction of this port has been completed eight months ahead of schedule. The 30-year concession
to develop and operate this new container terminal in Callao's southern zone was granted to DP World Callao in July 2006 and
construction works started in April 2008.
President Garcia went on to say that initiatives like Muelle Sur are only possible with investment and stability, "without which large-
scale projects such as Chavimochic, Chin Piura and Majes could not be executed."
"Further on, the Inter-Oceanic Highway connecting Peru and Brazil will also be completed as well as the ports on the jungle rivers and
the large airports such as Chincheros in Cusco," he added.
