MACABRE IN A PRODUCTION BY PETER SELLARS

In his opera Le Grand Macabre, the Hungarian composer Gyorgy Ligeti
created an intriguing spectacle of horror and comedy. Premiered in 1978
and substantially revised in the 1990s, the work plays out in the fictitious
"Breughelland" whose inhabitants won't give up their addiction to pleasure
even though the end of the world has just been announced. In this
production by Peter Sellars, who gives the work an apocalyptic setting, a
brilliant ensemble of soloists, the Rundfunkchor Berlin and the Berliner
Philharmoniker under the direction of chief conductor Sir Simon Rattle all
helped make a huge success of this irresistible work with the press and
public alike. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung praised the work as
"refreshingly scathing, a sophisticated abundance of quotations,
outrageously funny and gorily serious," which the chorus and orchestra
presented "with precision and relish; together with the support of an
"exquisite team of singers".

ON CD AND BLU-RAY: CLAUDIO ABBADO'S LAST CONCERT WITH
[HE BERLINER PHILHARMONIKER
Claudio Abbado was one of the outstanding personalities in the history of
the Berliner Philharmoniker. In May 2013, their unique partnership ended
with Abbado's last concert with the orchestra. The programme included two
of the most important works of musical Romanticism: Hector Berlioz's
visionary Symphonie fantastique and Felix Mendelssohn's magical,
shimmering music for A Midsummer Night's Dream. The Berliner
Philharmoniker Recordings label presents audio and video recordings of this
memorable evening in a luxury linen hardcover edition. With comprehensive
articles, bonus videos and previously unpublished photographs, it
documents Abbada's work with the orchestra whose chief conductor he was
from 1990 to 2002.
The edition contains the recordings on CD and in high resolution audio on a
Blu-ray disc which also features a video of the concert. The bonus material
includes a historical documentary about Abbado's first year as chief
conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker.
