Amalia Dayan Julian Schnabel Susan Sarandon invite you to an evening with Rula Jebreal, author of the book The inspiration of Julian Schnabel's new film "Miral" (please scroll down to screening invite on Dec. 9th] Friday, December 10th, 2010 at the home of Amalia Da an and Adam Lindemann 7:00pm - Cocktails, Discussion with the author 8:00pm - Dinner this invitation is non-transferable On her way to work on the morning of April 10 1948, Hind Husseini, a young woman from an aristocratic family, came across fifty-five children being unloaded from an Israeli army truck, left huddled together crying. They were survivors of a massacre that took place in a small village called Deir Yassin. It was the beginning of the war of 1948. Hind took them to her ancestral home and proceeded to sell all of her possessions to start what would become the Dar El-Tiffel orphanage, The Children's Home, in East Jerusalem, that at its height housed over 3,000 girls, an oasis for Palestinian orphans. Miral is left at Dar El-Tiffel after her mother's suicide, a recipient of Hind Husseini's deep commitment of love and to education even in the most impossible circumstances. Miral is a Palestinian teenager, the heir to her family's legacy of political and emotional upheaval defined by the historic events concurrent with the birth of the State of Israel. Mira/ is the story of its effect on four radically different women whose lives intertwine to create an unexpected and surprising fabric that embodies issues that have still not been resolved today. Miral, the flower that grows on the side of the road, winds its way through the tragic life of Nadia who was abused by her stepfather and becomes a belly dancer in Jaffa, then in prison meets Fatima, a frustrated nurse whose response to pain and futile violence is terrorism, and Nadia's daughter Miral who as a young person was part of a generation that lived through the first Intifada, The Palestinian Uprising, 1987-1993. This book is about love and education and how it saves a girl whose awareness and sense of responsibility to her people forces her to act and find justice in an extreme circumstance. This is an encouraging tale of what can happen if someone is given a chance. Amalia Dayan is the granddaughter of late Israeli Defense Minister, Moshe Dayan. He was the chief of staff of the Israeli Defense Forces under Prime Minister Golda Meir, he is also known for commanding the Forces in the Six Day War.
