From: Donald Rubin To: "Jeffrey E." <jeevacation®gmail.com> Subject: Re: Placebo effects, EB, etc. Date: Thu, 08 Dec 2016 00:43:05 +0000 I'm speaking the Adriaan Tuiten tomorrow at 6:30 am our time, and I"I try to arrange a skype call. It cannot be tomorrow because I'm in a deposition all day. On Dec 7, 2016, at 6:57 PM, Donald Rubin < > wrote: Sony for the delay. Had meetings all day with a former PhD student and a current student. Not a silly question. I think that it has a lot to do with how data are collected and who summarizes them. With recorded data there is often a lot of rounding, truncating, heaping (meaning on nice round numbers, as in age heaping), and "filtering" meaning by the data collector to avoid reporting suspicious values that could lead to scorn. In some contexts we also have scores that are averages of many values or effects, which push toward the gaussian by the CLT; for example, I used to work at ETS, and exams are notorious for those effects. Theoretical distributions like the Cauchy are almost always just approximations because machines or people cannot record data with an infinite number of places. I think your question is relatively deep with a variety of answers depending on the context and could change as we get better at recording data. :) On Dec 7, 2016, at 12:52 PM, jeffrey E. <jeevacation®gmail.com> wrote: query, why are so many distributions in nature so consistant and accurate. doesnt it give you pause. . like centrigal force. not a true force but one we sense. many distributions could be describeds as pseudo forces pushing the tails toward the mean.. . could gravity be one of these pseudo type forces pushing things towards a distribution.?? not as silly a question as it first might appear to be . :) On Wed, Dec 7, 2016 at 1:47 PM, Donald Rubin < wrote: Think so. The next time that we're in the same town, we could talk about the statistical ideas underlying ways to disentangle placebo effects from biological effects of drugs and why that's important for FDA approvals and for prescripts in the docs office — different answers, I think. 2. I can send some recent things on the topic of placebo response, which are still not that wonderfully written. 3. If interested in exploring investing in EB, I can put you in touch with Adriaan, who lives in Amsterdam. Are any of these appealing? I prefer 1 to 2. I think a face to face version of 3 could be arranged either here or there. Let me know. First, I think we have some mutual interests concerning the complications of doing experiments with humans, rather than plants or animals or tires. One complication is noncompliance with the assigned treatment, which we briefly discussed at the dinner, but the more interesting one is the placebo effect, which can be gigantic, for example in "viagra" type studies, which we didn't get around to discussing except indirectly in the context of the Emotional Brain (EB) female viagra issue. More generally, this is related to FDA standards for approving drugs. A slight aside: in January I'm one of three people getting honorary degrees from the Medical Faculty of the University of Uppsala in Sweden, where one of the others is Robert Califf, the current Commissioner of the FDA (the other is Marcia McNutt, the current President of the National Academy of Sciences), so I should get the chance to bend his ear at various meals (a former commissioner — under Bush II — was a partial PhD student of mine when he was getting his MD at Harvard and his PhD in Econ at MIT, and remains a good friend: Mark McClellen, who is interested in this stuff and remains quite influential in DC, I think). But the reason for rambling about the FDA and placebo effects is the following. This morning I just had an exchange of emails with the CEO of EB, whom I've known and worked with for about three years, Adriaan Tuiten. He wrote that FDA has agreed with EB's proposal for more trials, and the EB board of directors just approved the issuance of about 12 million Euros in stock to pay for these trials. Adriaan thinks that they may have enough connections now, but would you be interested in participating? I already have some stock, which I earned though consulting. I think EB is interesting but still needs more wisdom when it comes to their statistics (I've been to FDA with them two or three times, and I think they still need help with EFTA01059806 some of their ideas e.g., using SNPs). If interested in tossing some money their way, let me know. In any case, I very much enjoyed our last conversations, and I look forward to seeing you again, either in Cambridge or in NYC, which I'll probably get to in the next couple of weeks. Sometime when I get to NYC, which I often do to visit Columbia connections, I'd like to be in touch, and give Jeffery more lectures in statistics - I think he has some potential! Also, Martin, should we try to touch base on Monday? The rest of the week is pretty much shot for me with visitors.
