Great idea, Stephanie! - Thanks for informing me about that grant program - Absolutely -
A UC-wide Music Mind & Brain course would mesh nicely with the President's Research Catalyst Award
2015-6 and with the UC Multi-Campus Music/Science Research Initiative I co-direct - and with my ongoing
book-writing work. So, yes, if I can get to the magic number 3 this year w/ help from Profs Schlinger, Miller,
and Knowlton and Deans Sork and Smith so I could become an adjunct prof, I would definitely put in that
grant application.
Hopefully I could get some support for the third course from them for at least one year, then when the Cluster
seminar becomes available again in AY 2018-9 that would be the third, unless everyone wanted me to stay on
those three. (Fngers crossed that Cluster seminar might become available this AY, but I won't know for sure
until Dec/Jan, which is when Prof Chandler asked me to check back in with him.
Gratefully,
Mark

Hi Mark,
This year, I've only been allocated to support the Music INdustry course. I was thinking you could suggest to
Barney either a pre-course to a larger audience, or the Auditory Neurobiology course. Then the cluster would
make 3. But perhaps you can get Barney to support two.
What do you think about also floating the following idea to Barney: Once you are Adjunct, you can also
apply for a grant to develop a UC-wide online course (all the rage) on Music and the Brain.

My colleague Rachelle did this for her area of research so there is expertise here in the department.

Grants are --110k and filming can take place on UCLA campus through the Office of Instructional
Development.

Maybe we should add a jam session to the talk! LOL - I have a home practice studio and have had jam
sessions with faculty and students from time to time towards the end of my Spring Quarter class and into
the summer - a recording with two 2013 students (one a pre-med psych major) and a professional producer
and engineer at the famed Boom Boom Room in Burbank came out of those (I will send you the link - feel
free to share with Prof Schlinger.)
I will email you as soon as I hear from Prof Schlinger.
I may have mentioned that Greg and Barbara suggested I talk with Dean Sork before or after talking with
Barney - seems like after would be more appropriate, if you, Barney, and Dean Smith agree.
Which version of the Music Mind & Brain course did you decide on? The one-quarter abbreviated version
we've been doing, or the two-quarter original version (with the first quarter accepting 50+ students as
discussed with Greg and Barbara)?
(If we do the two-quarter seminar plus the Auditory Neurbiology lecture course that would meet the three
Dean Smith and I were shooting for it: adjunct appt. Then depending on what Judi, you, Barney, and Scott
Chandler would like, I could substitute the Freshman Cluster seminar on Neuroscience & the Arts for one
of the seminars if that would be helpful.)

Dear Mark,
Good news. Just got off the phone with Barney. He will be getting in touch with you. I'm not sure when
but he seemed open to the idea of pursuing this. He has all your materials... CV and syllabi which he is
impressed with. As Chair of my Department of Integrative Biology and Physiology, he is in a position to
finally make this happen. Be aware that he may ask you to give a talk to our faculty or some other way
of vetting so that the faculty come on board.
Music plays a big part in his life. He plays the guitar and also is an avid bird watcher (as well as
conducting research on birds). Within our department, we have offered upper division electives in
sensory processing but these faculty have retired or may soon so I would definitely float the Auditory
Neurobiology course in addition to Music and the Brain (which you can tell him is already supported
through Neuroscience). Not sure about the cluster but you can mention that to him as well.
Stay tuned and, if he does ask you for some type of interview process, I can walk you through it.
Cheers,
-Stephanie

If there's anything more I can do re: adding to the two syllabi for full Music Mind Brain seminar and
Auditory Neurobiology lecture course please let me know.
Have a great Labor Day Weekend - looks/feels like it's gonna be a hot one

Rachelle talked to Barney today. Now I am invited to talk to Barney... Sony it's so slow-go. On the
up-side, we are moving forward with moving Music Industry 103 to Neuroscience. I will keep you
posted but please do check in if you haven't heard from me in awhile.

Hi Mark,
Rachelle is going to contact Barney to gauge interest in expanding the Music and the Brain
course into two quarters, one being for 50 students and open to PhySci majors. She is also going
to talk to her contact in the Development office here. (Rachelle's husband is a cardiologist who
has taught to PhySci majors so she understands the added value of physician-student contact).
Could you send me your syllabus for the semester-long version of the course that you taught at
Harvard?
Thanks,
Stephanie
