Just had a conversation with JE about„ among other things, fruit trees. He wants us to keep moving on this and his only worry is bringing in diseases/bugs (I explained about Florida citrus and the concern about citrus canker - and the need to get disease free plants from Texas). I have copies of Randy's fruit tree pictures here and can show JE but he didn't seem anxious to look at them. So ....as we discussed lets get Randy to put together a quote including: • The trees of which he sent us pictures (still need to know if he can get the more exciting mango varieties that we put on our suggested list) • Other good looking and interesting Miit trees he can send. • 7 gal white oleander to fill a shipment At the same time seeing which citrus he can get us from Texas Many thanks P Icy 1 EFTA00616479 Jul 02 07 12:05p p• 1 Emad. Email not running so I'm sending this by FAX The fruit trees pictures that Randy sent to us on Friday are all good for LSJ. Nice plants. The Jakfruit is especially exciting as it has the worlds heaviest fruit - can be 601bs or even more per fruit. The need to get disease free citrus stock from Texas is unfortunate but is for the best: the last thing we want to deal with is bringing a contagious disease to the VI. If this is OK with you, Randy can give us prices on the trees he has found so far and also give us a unit price on 7gal white oleander. The latter can be used to fill up a container once we get enough fruit tees. Randy: which variety of Mango is pictured? We need to get some really good varieties at a good size. Also please keep up the hunt for other good fruit trees: this first batch you sent was really exciting. Emad: Please would keep JE up to date with pictures of the fruit trees as Randy sends them. As soon as we have enough to fill a container (20f1?) lets get final costs and JE permission to get going. We can have the ground ready to plant with two weeks notice (Provided that Scott does his work). June 26. 2007 6:26 PM To: Randy Melvin Cc: Emad Hanna Subject: Fruit trees etc Attachments: Fruit trees.doc Randy Thanks for our conversation earlier today. Here is a summary of that conversation: • Please let me have a unit price on 7ga1 white oleander. I can't imagine Mr Epstein will want a 20ft container of nothing but Oleander (1000 units?) but we will see when he gets here later in the week. • • Fruit trees: we will happily accept large container grown citrus but you will look into larger field-grown trees and consult with you inspector about phytosanitary certificates etc. • We arc looking for the best eating mangos and you will find a suggestion on the list attached (previously sent). The largest container grown plants you can get would be best. • You mentioned Litchee and Longan we will be happy to take these PROVIDED t plants are good loo ing. iiriatal ton you suggest Carambola - happy to take two large plants. tt. • vocados - we didn't discuss this but keep your eyes open or good looking specimens. • As for the rest just keep looking for anything that produces fruit and looks good and send us a picture. And finally - thanks for the last order - the plants were in great shape - well packed and GOOD LOOKING. (Incidentally we don't have working e-mail on LSJ at the moment so replies will depend on me opening up my little home computer in the evenings) Best wishes Brinsley & Julie EFTA00616484 Little St James Fruit Orchard Request for trees. Site: The LSJ fruit orchard will run from the Iguana Corner to a point NW of the Gym. The site is comparatively protected (in the lee of the ridge running NE from the Gym) and has average LSJ stony/loam soil. The orchard will be sited on a terrace approximately 15 feet wide supported by a stone retaining wall. This wall is an enhancement to the wall that already exists lining the south side of the road from the Iguana Corner running towards the flagpole. Excavation/Construction: The terrace will be excavated using the LSJ Bulldozer this will take approx two days of work. The terrace walls will initially be dry stack and will take a team of 4 builders (LSJ team) approx 10 days (200 II of wall 3- 4 feet in height). Later this wall will be converted to a mortared wall to match the island vernacular walls. The new wall above the terrace will also be dry stack and will also take approx 10 days to construct. Soil preparation: Soil will be enhanced by the addition of coir fiber and composted cotton burr (both already on LSJ). Soil preparation will be done as the trees are planted. Irrigation: Scott Graff (irrigation) has been asked for a quotation for providing automatic low volume (tree ring) irrigation round each of 15 semi mature fruit trees. At the same time Scott will be quoting for similar irrigation for 50 Shady Lady (Black Olive) trees that will be relocated from the flagpole area to the area immediately NE of the Gym. Care Training: Fruit trees need specialized care to ensure good fruiting and disease control. The ones selected below are easier than usual but we will, nevertheless need to have one person (maybe more) trained in fruit tree care. We suggest this is best done by sending those people to the Department of Agriculture for 3-4 days to work with Errol Chichester (horticulturist for the department of agriculture) who is the most knowledgeable person in the VI on fruit tree care. Tree Specification: Mr. Epstein has specifically requested that all trees are of adult size and ready to bloom/fruit. B&B or containergrown are equally acceptable. EFTA00616485 Trees required: (total of 17 trees) Randy to review and advise on availability and cost. Also to recommend alternatives as appropriate. 1. Mango (Mangifera indica). Five mature trees of the best eating (low fiber in the flesh)varieties. Suggest Carrie, Cushman, Glenn, Cogshall. We should also have one tree of Tommy Atkins for attractive fruit. Anderson would also be good as it is a known successful W Indian variety and has spectacularly large fruits. Zill at Lake Worth have a great selection. 2. Lychee (Litchi chinensis). Lin trees. We understand that Randy has access to some mature trees and is willing to root prune them for shipment to us later in the year. We will plant these in the most protected spot and irrigate more heavily (we are probably a little to dry for reliable fruit production). R t. Citrus Species: All on appropriate (sour orange) rootstocks please. a. Sweet Orange: suggest two trees of varieties suitable for higher humidity/non- Mediterranean climate such as Valencia, Pineapple or Hamlin —or other varieties as recommended by Florida fruit growers for our climate. (this will be an experiment as few orange species are currently grown in the VI. b. Mandarin orange: (These are good drought tolerant trees) c. One each of Mandarin and Satsuma — varieties as recommended by Florida growers for our climate. d. Lime: one tree of (thornless if available) West Indian (key) lime (Citrus aurantifolia). We believe randy has a tree he is willing to root prune for us. e. Pummelo (Citrus maxima) as an alternative to grapefruit - attractive large fruited tree: One tree . 4. Avocado: Four trees (please get mix of type A and type B cultivars to ensure successful pollination) West Indian (Not Californian) varieties suitable for ow climate please. This is the end of the list for now: however we will plan for enhancing the fruit orchard in the future with the addition of other fruit that do well in the drier Caribbean such as breadfruit, akee, banana, papaya and some of the more recherché fruits such as malay apple, guava and others as available locally.
