Judith Miklossy Director Prevention Alzheimer International Fondation International Alzheimer Research Center 1921 Martigny-Croix CP 16 1921 Switzerland URLs: www.preventionalzheimer.org www.miklossy.ch January 5, 2015 Dear President, dear Mr. Jeffrey Epstein As Director of the Prevention Alzheimer International Foundation I am contacting you, to suggest a project, which would help millions. During my work as neurology and psychiatry I realized that to put a diagnosis for various chronic neuropsychiatric disorders (Alzheimer, Parkinson, MS, ALS etc..) does not help us to treat the patients. As we do not know the cause of these disorders we cannot give a targeted therapy. To know more about these disorders I have completed my clinical formation by a formation in neuropathology. In parallel, I have also tried to fulfill my obligation on behalf of my family. With their precious help we have done everything possible to promote this research. I am the founder and previous president of the Prevention Alzheimer International Foundation, registered in Switzerland. Presently I am director of this new foundation and of the International Alzheimer Research Center, a non-profit medical research center. As I am among the pioneers of this emerging field of research, I am responsible for the development of this project. The most frequent cause of dementia is Alzheimer's disease. The number of patients diagnosed with dementia is expected to double or even triple by 2050. Alzheimer's disease is the sixth leading cause of all deaths in the United State. Whereas other major causes of death are decreasing, deaths due to Alzheimer's disease are dramatically increasing. Deaths attributable to Alzheimer's disease increased to 47% between 2000 and 2006. The annual direct and indirect costs related to Alzheimer's disease and other dementias are an estimated 148 billion dollars. Growing number of epidemiological studies in the United States and Europe reveals that if the cause of dementia is not revealed and appropriate diagnostic tests and treatments are not established we will face the most intractable health problem the next decades. Although the first description of Alzheimer disease dates back to a century ago, and despite of the enormous progress made in Alzheimer research, the elucidation of the cause of this devastating disorder is still unclear and the treatment unresolved. EFTA01108247 It has been known from a century that chronic bacterial infection can cause dementia. Scientific observations and illustrations indeed show that chronic spirochetal infection can cause slowly progressive dementia and cortical atrophy in general paresis. Treponema pallidum, the spirochete causing syphilis can reproduce the pathological and biological hallmarks, which define of Alzheimer's disease including beta amyloid deposition. Therefore it is imperative to continue research on an infectious origin, particularly on a spirochetal etiology of Alzheimer's disease. As soon as in 1907 Fischer suggested that microorganisms might play a role in senile plaque formation. Amyloidosis is frequently associated with chronic bacterial infections and experimental amyloidosis can be produced by injection of bacteria or their biologically active components in vitro and in vivo. From 1993, our research focused on the role of various spirochetes in Alzheimer's disease. Increasing amount of observations indicate that several types of spirochetes, including various periodontal pathogen spirochetes and Borrelia burgdorferi are involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. In a recent review httgaivavw.jneuroinflammation.com/content/8/1/90 all data available in the literature showed a strong significant association between the presence of spirochetes and Alzheimer's disease. Analysis of Koch's and Hill's criteria were in favor of causal relationship. Hill recommends that in such situation prompt action is needed. F1000 evaluation of this review by Professor George Perry, professor of biology and dean of the College of Sciences at the University of Texas at San Antonio, USA and past-president of the American Association of Neuropathologists: « An infectious origin of Alzheimer's disease has been suggested for many decades. In a wonderfully synthetic review, a convincing role for neurospirochetes is made. This review opens a new perspective on the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases. » We have indeed the answer on the etiology of Alzheimer's disease and we have today everything in our power to solve this problem and help millions. With your help we would be able to realize this important project You would be able to see the realization of hopes and preserve the dignity of all those who are suffering from these devastating disorders around the world. The Prevention Alzheimer International Foundation registered in Switzerland was founded to continue without frontiers this research in order to establish new targeted diagnostic tests and therapies for the prevention of Alzheimer's disease and other chronic inflammatory disorders. To go ahead with new promising projects a consistent work, courage against the opposition and jealousy and believe that we will succeed is necessary. It would be a pleasure if you would participate with us in our project If on the other side my letter represents any inconvenience, please accept my apology. At the beginning of this New Year I wish you satisfaction and peace for every day. We are looking forward to hear from you. EFTA01108248 With my best regards Sincerely, Judith Miklossy P.S.
