Dear Jeffrey,
We're now in our fourth year away from LSJ and we still think back to some of the good
times we had working for you. We wonder how you are and what the landscape looks
like and we wonder about the people with whom we used to work, especially our "crew".
We haven't been any good at keeping in touch so maybe those questions will always be
unanswered. We want to let you know that we have positive and happy memories of our
time working for you on LSJ.
This letter has a further purpose: Over the past two years Julie has been creating a series
of collage/paintings based on her early life in Kenya and more recently on a series of US
Virgin Island pictures. She has made one painting for you and, if you agree, we would
like to send it to you as a present. The picture is made of numerous tiny paper tiles and
some of the tiles are fragments of the pencil notes you gave us as landscape suggestions.
The US flag is part of the Virgin Islands' identity and also somewhat represents LSJ - I'm
sure you have heard that a local way of identifying LSJ is "the island with two US flags".
The picture is 24"x48" with a hemlock frame and is rather heavy so we would rather send
it to your New York office (we don't have the current NY address.) We enclose a small
photo and you can also see it on our website at wwwfulleandbrinsley.com.
Very briefly, we returned to the "mainland" at a very tough financial time for everyone.
We knew there were no opportunities for us in the gardening world (especially with
tropical experience counting for little in the wet northwest) so we set up a photographic

business, opening a gallery and studio in downtown Cottage Grove. This was fun, it paid
its bills, made us some friends and got us active in our community through chamber
membership and the like. But everyone now has a camera so the traditional family
portrait and wedding world barely exists any more. We discovered, however that one of
the main photographic needs in our area is the restoration and digitization of old family
photographs as well as historical photos in our local museum collections. For a time this
became our main work in addition to photographing artwork and taking business
portraits.
While owning a gallery was rewarding, we ended up tied to an indoor location which left
us too little time be outdoors getting the new pictures we need to produce large
photographs to sell from the gallery wall. We finally closed the gallery, constructed a
home-based studio and gallery and have begun to rely more and more on our website to
generate business. Julie is now redesigning the website to give it a stronger focus on the
work which we enjoy and which we can do better than others photographers
(photographing babies and weddings is best left to those who like that sort of thing). So
we are slowly taking off in a new direction, catering more for the interior decoration
world and getting much more time to ourselves. If you have the time, do check on our
website to see what we are doing.
The Pacific Northwest is wet (as you mentioned when we were about to leave LSJ) but it
really isn't that bad, snow and frosts are brief, everything grows so well and we are green
the year round. We have seven gigantic 120-ft tall Douglas-fir trees in our garden (see
photo attached).
So we've talked about writing to you for a couple of years and now we have managed it.
If you get the opportunity please remember us to a couple of people whom we remember
with great affection, especially Peter St.Omer. We have spoken with Daphne and Anna
(really nice people) at FTC.
The picture is yours if you let us know where in NYC to send it.
Very best wishes for 2012 from both of us.
and Brinsley
