Dear Mr. Epstein,
It's turned chilly here in Vermont but we had a great Marlboro season and the best weather we
have had in decades. With auditions for the 46th New York String Orchestra Seminar about to
start, I feel very lucky to go from one remarkable musical community to another.
For the lucky young musicians who will be chosen this year, there are some memorable musical
and professional discoveries in store, and Jaime has come up with some beautiful programs (see
attached) — works by Mozart, Beethoven, Barber and Tchaikovsky for them to explore with him.
The chamber music workshops, coached by distinguished past participants — including members
of the Guarneri, Emerson, Orion Quartets and Metropolitan Opera Orchestra —will also open up
remarkable new musical worlds for our participants. Discoveries are what the Seminar is all
about, and it's been wonderful to see the impact of the Seminar - what so many have called "a
life-changing experience." Our alumni are prominent in every area of music and we discovered
last year that 40 of them are concertmasters of major symphony orchestras here and abroad.
Jaime, Rohana and all of us were very touched by the reflections sent to us by alumni last year
when we celebrated Jaime's 20i° Anniversary of leading the program and the 45th New York
String Orchestra Seminar. We're sure that you will also be moved by what the Seminar has
meant to David Kim, concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the others on the enclosed
page.
But, to make it all happen this year, we need to raise S 265,000 and we need your help to
give this incomparable experience to a new group of young musicians. As Johannes Quartet
violinist Jessica Lee wrote, "the sheer extent to which the NYSOS has had an impact on so many
thousands of musicians cannot be fathomed."
Martha and I have had great pleasure in underwriting two scholarships (each valued at S 3,750)
each year and know that helping those lessons to be learned and enabling Jaime and these
wonderful young musicians to make great music will be gratifying for you as well. We hope that
you will consider renewing your previous gift of two full scholarships, or making as generous a
gift as possible to support the wonderful young musicians of the 2014 New York String Orchestra
Seminar, and that you will also consider making a gift to the special 20/45 Anniversary Fund
(to which Martha and I are contributing S 10,000 over three years) to honor Jaime's 20 years as
leader of the Seminar, as well as the Seminar's 45th Anniversary.
Many, many thanks for your support.

On the Occasion of the 45th New York String Orchestra Seminar
David Kim, concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra
(More than twenty NYSOS alumni are members of the Philadelphia Orchestra)
"My experiences at NYSOS are easily some of the fondest memories of my life as a musician. I still remember the chills that
ran down my spine as I sat amongst my friends on stage looking out in to a full Carnegie Hall on Christmas Eve. Even now, 34
years later, my memories are crystal clear of the wonderful repertoire, the wise words of Alexander Schneider, the chamber
music that I learned and the esteemed coaches who taught us, the meats we shared together, and most Importantly - the
friends for life that I made during those magical weeks. To this day, those memories fill my heart with warmth and gratitude
for the privilege of such life-changing experiences." (NYSOS 1979, 1980)
C,J, Chan principal viola of the Philadelphia Orchestra & member of the Johannes String Quartet (soloist 12/28/2013 concert)
in December of 1986, I arrived in NY to participate in NYSOS. When I started playing at the first rehearsal with Sasha, I still
remember the energy and such high quality playing from the orchestra I had never experienced before. When we walked on
the stage of the Carnegie Hall, the magic started... The acoustic of the hall was amazing, interaction between all the friends I
made in short time, and of course the music making. I will never forget it. Twenty eight years later, I felt the same energy and
atmosphere under the direction of Jaime Laredo. What an amazing experience of feeling the magic all over againir (NYSOS
1986)
Richard King. Principal Horn. Cleveland Orchestra
was 18 and 19 and a student at the Curtis Institute of Music in the two years that I participated in the New
York String Orchestra Seminar. It was truly a life-changing experience for me and even though we were together for only ten
days each year, it opened my mind to exciting and different ways of making music that remain as vivid today as they were
then.' (NYSOS 1987, 1988)
Jessica Lee, soloist and member of the Johannes String Quartet (soloist on 12/28/2013 concert)
1 auditioned for NYSOS thinking that it would be a fun way to spend the Christmas holidays - nothing more, nothing less,
approached in the carefree manner only an 18-year old can have. Of course, I was drawn to it initially knowing that Jaime
would be conducting, that it was a prestigious thing to do, and that there would be wonderful coaches to work with. I had no
idea what an impact it would have on my life, and it wasn't really until this past concert that I fully realized what an
overwhelming presence it has had and will continue to have. For those of you who know just how incredible it Is to work
with Jaime; that alone could make this story. However, in addition to that, as I was standing in line at the potluck dinner for
NYSOS a few weeks ago, seeing all my current generation NYSOS alumni and so many early-years NYSOS alumni, and thinking
about how many NYSOS alumni I perform with, teach with, and hear in concert everywhere I go, I was absolutely speechless.
We all share this marvelous experience, and the sheer extent to which NYSOS has had an impact on so many thousands of
musicians cannot be fathomed. In our current world of go-go-go, change every five seconds, speed, and everything done
instantly, NYSOS Is an even more relevant rock to ding to, look up to, and emulate. I'm so grateful for it and thank every
single person who has made this program possible for so many of us, for which I will always be grateful." (NYSOS 2001)
Steven Frucht, MD, Professor of Neurology. Mount Sinai School of Medicine
was a member of the New York String Orchestra in 1983 when I was a high school senior. I have such vivid memories of
those ten days...Yo-Yo and Isaac Stern were the soloists in the Brahms Double....) remember Sasha Schneider and Stern
kvelling over Yo-Yo's phrasing....) got to play the fourth fiddle part of the Vivaldi 4 Violin Concerto at Kennedy Center and
Carnegie....it was a wonderful experience." (NYSOS 1983)
Alumni of the New York String Orchestra sit as concertmasters of over 40 symphony orchestras including Boston, Chicago, Cleveland,
Philadelphia, los Angeles and the Czech Philharmonic; play in orchestras in every single state; are members of world-renowned
chamber groups; and share the lessons learned at the Seminar with their students every day across the nation on the faculties ofmajor
institutions and conservatories, at public schools, andin private lessons.
